Exchange enrollment for 2017 under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) totaled 11.5 million people as of December 24, the federal government announced.
This is 286,000 more enrollees than signed up for 2016 health plans.
Why this matters
ACA critics have said the law needs to be repealed because its basic design is not working and has resulted in a "death spiral" for enrollments because of spikes in premiums and insurers leaving the markets in some states.
