Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) indicated that risk for side effects was the most important factor influencing their preference among disease-modifying therapies (DMTs).
Why this matters
Many DMTs are now available for MS, but the factors influencing patients’ preferences are not well explored.
The DMT attribute assigned greatest relative importance was risk for side effects (32.9%), followed by route of administration (26.1%), frequency of administration (22.7%), prevention of disease progression (10.0%), and prevention of relapse (8.3%).
This pattern was similar whether patients had lower or higher Expanded Disability Status Scale scores.
Patients who had received their diagnosis less than a year ago had the greatest importance assigned to risk for side effects (39.0%)
