The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that patients prescribed opioids for 3 d or fewer are less likely to become dependent on them than patients who are given longer-term prescriptions. Addiction experts told CBS News that clinicians should always discuss the risks of opioids with their patients before prescribing them, and consider prescribing nonnarcotic painkillers as a first-line treatment instead.
