Requiring prescribers to reference a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) database before prescribing opioids is related to a reduction in drug-seeking behavior, according to research from the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Examining Medicare data, the researchers found evidence of fewer drug-seeking behaviors in states where physicians must use the PDMP database to evaluate a patient's prescribing history before deciding whether to prescribe opioids.
